In the Hot Seat? Author Eve Vaughn

by Koko Brown June 29, 2011
written by Koko Brown June 29, 2011

I’ve done quite a few interviews in my day and at times they can be excrutiatingly painful. So, I thought it would be fun to turn the tables on someone else, put them in the hot seat so to speak, while I sit back, relax and pick their brains. I’m going to try and make this a monthly endeavor and hopefully, I can’t get some feedback from you readers on which author you would like to get to know better in the future.

My first guinea…I mean guest author is the ever charming Eve Vaughn! Author of more than forty multicultural romance titles in practically every genre including paranormal, contemporary and sci-fi, Eve is one of the pioneers of interracial erotic romance.

And despite the recent birth of a baby girl, Eve is still growing strong as you can tell from her ever growing backlist! So sit down, kick up your heels, while I put Eve Vaughn in the hot seat!

How do you approach your books? Do you look at the current market? Or are your stories late night snacks that have awakened you in the middle of the night? I usually write the type of book I would like to read. I find, at least in my case, if I’m writing simply just to follow a trend then it really shows in the writing that my heart isn’t in it.

How has the market changed since you began writing? Do you like or not like how the industry has evolved? I see a lot more books in the niche I write for. I think it’s a good thing because that means there’s an interest out there for what I write.

Is there a particular genre you’re not writing in now that you would one day like to dabble in? Why ? I’d love to try my hand at a YA. Because I’ve always loved the written word from an early age, so I’d love to promote a book that would encourage young people to read.

Do you see any market trends you’re excited about? Or where do you see the interracial market heading? I’m very oblivious to market trends because I like what I like, but I’m happy to see more multiculturalism in mainstream books.

What advice would you give aspiring authors interested in writing interracial/ multicultural romance? I think first and foremost I think most authors should learn the craft, research your demographic, read popular books in the genre and don’t be afraid to reach out to other authors.

You’ve written more than forty books all while having a 9 to 5 job. What’s your secret? Limited sleep. (Ha!)

You recently had a baby. First and upmost congratulations. Second, how has that changed your writing or if at all?Definitely. I have to work my schedule around her, which means I’m up late at night writing, but she’s worth every bit of lost sleep.

What’s your favorite sub genre to write and why? I like paranormal because you get to create worlds and rules.

How do you think the surge in e-readers will impact publishing in the next five years? I think e-books will continue to outpace the sell of traditional form of bound books.
I hate to say it for the hardcore traditionalists, but I think we’re seeing the end of days for paperback books. Maybe not in this generation but certainly by the next.

What inspired you to write your first book? What inspires you to write the next?
I’ve always wanted to write, but never knew how to go about it. One day I stumbled across an e-publisher and read the books there and thought I’d like to try my hand at it. And the need to write just consumed me. I couldn’t stop.

Do you have a specific writing style (first person, omniscient point of view, etc) that you prefer? I usually write in third person. I’ve written one first person book, but I prefer third person because I find that easiest for me.

If you had to choose, which author would you consider the greatest influence? Johanna Lindsey. I’ve collected all of her books over the years. Judy Blume. The first big girl book I ever read(the first without pictures) was Super Fudge. She’ll always hold a special place in my heart.

What book(s) are you reading now?
The Host by Stephanie Meyer.

Do you like writing Alpha Males? If so can you tell me what the secret ingredient is with creating the perfect Alpha in Romance? I love writing Alphas. I think the key to writing an Alpha, write him just to the edge of asshole, but its a very fine line.

Okay let’s get to some fun facts about you. What’s under your bed? Books!

Chocolate or Vanilla? Chocolate

Color Me Bad or LOF? As they look now? Neither. (HA!)

Last movie you’ve seen (at a movie theater)? Sad to say, but I don’t remember

Is there anything else you want share about your work to your readers? I always love getting feedback from my readers.

If you haven’t read any of Eve Vaughn’s books, you should. She’s a great storyteller and her heroes are always deliciusly alpha! Eve’s latest offering is Holiday Hell from Loose-Id publishing. Want to check out her entire backlist, visit her official website at http://www.evevaughn.com/.

 Christmas sucks!

Or at least that’s what Sheridan Lewis believes. With plans to hide away for the rest of the season, she’s dismayed to be sent on a trip so close to Christmas with her boss and arch nemesis, Brady McGuire. Not only does she have to suffer through the season, but work closely with a man who thinks he’s hot stuff because he’s the CEO’s grandson. So what if he has dreamy eyes, broad shoulders and a physique any Olympian would be jealous of, nothing good could possibly come out of their trip together.

Insufferable brat!

There’s nothing more that Brady McGuire wants to do than take Sheridan Lewis over his knee and give her the spanking she sorely deserves. She’s loud, obnoxious, and has a Napoleon complex. It’s bad enough dealing with her on a daily basis, but being through together for a two week trip where they’ll have to work closely together. No way. The last thing he wants is his holidays to be ruined by this little Scrooge. So what if her very scent drives him mad and she has a body made for sinning. She’s still a pain in the ass.

Thrown together during the holidays, these two headstrong idiots may just find their common ground in each other and turn their hell into a holiday after all.
